Bright Debuts BrightClip
Intelligent Data Recording Technology

Bright is showing BrightClip, its new intelligent data recording technology, for the first time at NAB 2008. BrightClip represents a major new technology that will bring cost savings to digital postproduction workflows by providing superior disk recording and playback of media within the digital postproduction environment.
The difference between a properly recorded clip and an arbitrarily recorded clip can degrade by as much as 95% on the same underlying hardware. Loss of performance through arbitrary recording is not only high but also inconsistent and can lead to many hours of unscheduled optimizing tasks before work can progress - putting critical project delivery dates at risk.
BrightClip employs advanced, highly sophisticated technology to ensure media is laid out logically onto the disks whenever it is moved between postproduction systems. It supports out of sequence frame writing, making it a must-have for render farm and other data-intensive creative applications.
da Vinci’s Resolve®, and Revival™ Debut at NAB with BrightClip
da Vinci Systems, a leading developer of software tools for digital post-production, is demonstrating its Resolve® digital mastering suite and Revival™ restoration system fully integrated with Bright’s new BrightClip intelligent data recording technology for the first time at NAB 2008.

“BrightClip brings dramatic benefits to collaborative digital post-production workflows,” said Bill Robertson, general manager at da Vinci Systems. “The task of disk optimization is a burden to facilities. By integrating BrightClip into our product line, we are providing customers with increased predictability and performance.”
ARRI to Integrate BrightClip with
ARRISCAN Film Scanner Range
ARRI Film &TV is supporting BrightClip by integrating it with its
ARRISCAN film scanner range.

“BrightClip provides a much needed solution to the problem of disk optimization which causes significant down-time and unproductive delays in digital file-based workflows,” said Jens Rumberg, Project Leader ARRISCAN, ARRI Munich. “By integrating BrightClip into our products, our customers will experience dramatic benefits by eliminating the need to optimize media before it can be used. BrightClip is proven to produce phenomenal improvements to digital workflows that will be much welcomed by the post community as a whole.”
Drastic Technologies Announces Support for BrightClip
Drastic Technologies has also joined the growing list of software developers supporting BrightClip.

“We see BrightClip as the first sensible solution to the problem of media becoming randomized as it is moved between applications in a typical multi-project, multi-artist post facility,” said James Brooks, Development Manager, Drastic Technologies. “No other system guarantees that file sequences and media streams are laid down in the most optimal pattern, or that multiple writers will not cause data to become interleaved, causing systems to slow down and stop working efficiently.”
Customer News
Shooters Post & Transfer Installs BrightDrive for DI and Digital Film Processes
Shooters Post & Transfer in Philadelphia, USA, has installed a BrightDrive shareable media store for its visual effects and film finishing division - DIVE. BrightDrive has been installed at Shooters with two real-time workspaces, and is integrated with existing Apple X-SAN and X-RAID storage. The system is connected to 20 clients, including Autodesk’s Inferno and Smoke2K, daVinci’s Resolve and a Grass Valley Bones, enabling multiple operators to access and work on the same media concurrently.
“We needed a system that could provide centralized storage coupled with fast and easy accessibility to media for all operators,” said Ray Carballada, Chief Operating Officer, Shooters Post and Transfer. “We chose BrightDrive because it had the bandwidth we required and was able to work seamlessly with our existing systems. The ability to playout in real-time via the SAN network has given us a more collaborative and productive environment.”
BrightDrive also simplifies Shooters’ disk and data management functions and increases drive capacity through use of its own consolidated hardware and image-aware data management applications. Operators are able to work with single and mixed resolution projects without reformatting. The system also enables Shooters to output in any format including SD, PAL, HD 720p, 1080i, 24p, HDCAM SR, uncompressed HD, 4;4:4 and 2K.
SingTel mio TV, Singapore Chooses BrightDrive for New IPTV Service
Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel), Asia’s leading communications group and Singapore’s largest IPTV service provider, has purchased BrightDrive for a new data-centric postproduction facility for SingTel’s IPTV service, mio TV.
BrightDrive’s media sharing technology is central to the facility’s new tapeless postproduction workflow. SD or HD source tapes are captured into BrightDrive using dedicated ingest stations. A range of systems, including 11 Final Cut Pro/Kona systems, are able to access multiple real-time streams of 2k media simultaneously across the network. This allows processes such as editing and encoding to take place at the same time. The final encoded files are pushed across to mio TV’s streaming servers.
“mio TV requires a very intensive, high turn-around postproduction operation with tight integration between the various systems, “ said Kevin Liow, Senior Manager, Video Operations (IPTV & Content), SingTel. “We chose BrightDrive because of its proven technology and its ability to provide high performance media sharing across different hardware and software platforms. By enabling our colleagues to work in a range of formats and share content in a collaborative data-centric environment, BrightDrive enables us to achieve a high degree of flexibility from our postproduction facilities and maximize output without compromising quality. In addition, Bright Systems already has several installations in SE Asia and has established a reputation for giving customers first-class services.”
SingTel mio TV’s BrightDrive is being installed and supported by The Media Village, Bright Systems’ business partner for SE Asia.
CinePostproduction, Germany, Increases Output With BrightDrive
One of Europe’s longest established film specialists, CinePostproduction, has installed a high capacity BrightDrive at its branch, Bavaria Bild & Ton. The BrightDrive Pro 4 provides media sharing functionality for Bavaria Bild & Ton’s extensive HD and DI creative media facilities based at the famous film studios in Geiselgasteig, Munich, Germany.
By using BrightDrive, operators are able to work on the same media simultaneously
in real-time, sharing files between a da Vinci 2K and a Baselight 4. The system is configured with 30TB of online fibre channel storage and 60TB of Fast SATA nearline storage. They also have a BrightDrive Server High Availability (HA) option providing additional redundancy, and a BrightDrive GigE Expansion option which provides extra Ethernet and fibre channel interfaces for greater speed and systems flexibility. “BrightDrive is giving us solid, high performance media sharing capabilities which are
easy to use, fast and reliable,” Jan Froehlich, Business Development, D-Cinema, CinePostproduction Bavaria Bild & Ton. ”Our workflows are now highly efficient and we have a very collaborative and effective working environment. We have also been able to significantly speed up the flow of work and have reduced our average ‘time to completion’.”
Pixion, India, Installs BrightDrive for 4K DI Workflow
Pixion, a subsidiary of Century Communication, and one of India’s most influential postproduction companies, has installed BrightDrive as the infrastructure for its facility in Bandra, Mumbai. Pixion is using BrightDrive to manage and share digital media in its film, DI and VFX departments.

Pixion’s BrightDrive is connected to several postproduction systems including multiple da Vinci Resolve® digital mastering suites and Revival restoration systems, 2 Thomson Spirit 4K Telecines, several Autodesk products, and a Thomson Bones postproduction framework. All operators are able to use the BrightDrive solution to access and share media simultaneously in a highly collaborative, data-centric environment.
Media is scanned using both Spirit 4Ks via a Bones engine directly into
BrightDrive Workspaces. A da Vinci Resolve Conform carries out conforming functions, making the media immediately available to operators for color grading. VFX scenes are accessible to Shake and Combustion operators and written back to the BrightDrive. Finished film sequences are recorded out to film using an ARRIlaser.
